Evaluating and structuring indicators for wetland assessment

Xuehua LIU, Yan SUN,

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2010, Volume 4, Issue 2,   Pages 221-227 doi: 10.1007/s11783-010-0029-0

Abstract: However, various indicators have been used in wetland assessment for different purposes and backgroundsAfter an extensive review of wetland assessment literatures, the reported indicators were evaluated usingThe results of these two methods were compared to study the commonalities and specialties of the indicatorsThey also showed that some indicators were widely used, including biodiversity, weather and climate,On the other hand, other sustainable indicators were easily ignored, such as environmental carrying capacity

Increased expression of coronin-1a in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: a potential diagnostic biomarker

Frontiers of Medicine 2022, Volume 16, Issue 5,   Pages 723-735 doi: 10.1007/s11684-021-0905-y

Abstract: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is the most common motor neuron disease. At present, no definite ALS biomarkers are available. In this study, exosomes from the plasma of patients with ALS and healthy controls were extracted, and differentially expressed exosomal proteins were compared. Among them, the expression of exosomal coronin-1a (CORO1A) was 5.3-fold higher than that in the controls. CORO1A increased with disease progression at a certain proportion in the plasma of patients with ALS and in the spinal cord of ALS mice. CORO1A was also overexpressed in NSC-34 motor neuron-like cells, and apoptosis, oxidative stress, and autophagic protein expression were evaluated. CORO1A overexpression resulted in increased apoptosis and oxidative stress, overactivated autophagy, and hindered the formation of autolysosomes. Moreover, CORO1A activated Ca2+-dependent phosphatase calcineurin, thereby blocking the fusion of autophagosomes and lysosomes. The inhibition of calcineurin activation by cyclosporin A reversed the damaged autolysosomes. In conclusion, the role of CORO1A in ALS pathogenesis was discovered, potentially affecting the disease onset and progression by blocking autophagic flux. Therefore, CORO1A might be a potential biomarker and therapeutic target for ALS.

treatment of reproductive diseases and infertility: an overview from the mechanism to the clinic alongside diagnostic

Frontiers of Medicine 2022, Volume 16, Issue 6,   Pages 827-858 doi: 10.1007/s11684-022-0948-8

Abstract: Infertility is experienced by 8%12% of adults in their reproductive period globally and has become a prevalent concern. Besides routine therapeutic methods, stem cells are rapidly being examined as viable alternative therapies in regenerative medicine and translational investigation. Remarkable progress has been made in understanding the biology and purpose of stem cells. The affected pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are further studied for their possible use in reproductive medicine, particularly for infertility induced by premature ovarian insufficiency and azoospermia. Accordingly, this study discusses current developments in the use of some kinds of MSCs such as adipose-derived stem cells, bone marrow stromal cells, umbilical cord MSCs, and menstrual blood MSCs. These methods have been used to manage ovarian and uterine disorders, and each technique presents a novel method for the therapy of infertility.
